Supreme Court Ruling on Marriage

On Friday, June 26, 2015, the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) handed down a landmark decision in several cases, the result of which is the redefinition of marriage to include same-sex unions.

While this decision becomes the law of the land, it does not change the true estate of marriage as instituted by God in the garden of Eden and upheld throughout scripture, by the very words of Jesus, and the natural law of creation seen throughout the world.

The implications for this ruling for organizations, in particular churches like St. Paul, are yet unknown. Whatever challenges we may face in the future as we stand firmly upon God’s Word, we will face them with the certain and unwavering confidence that God is the Lord of Heaven and Earth and we shall obey God rather than man (Acts 5:29).

Even as we stand firmly upon the Word of God, we will reach out in care and compassion to all who are impacted by same-sex attraction. There are individuals whose faith clings to God’s Word even as they wrestle with the temptations of being attracted to their same sex. There are members of our families, congregations, and communities who are searching for how best to love our neighbors who are homosexuals. We serve all people best by extending to them the same holy words of God’s Law and Gospel by which we ourselves are convicted of our sins and by which we are comforted by the full and free forgiveness from God.

We will engage a Bible Study series later this summer in which we will explore God’s Word on marriage and how we can respond in faith to the changing landscape of marriage in our country.
Sundays, 8:00am – 9:00am
July 19
August 2, 16, 23, 30
(the schedule is a little chopped up based on summer travel, but do mark your calendars)

Included here are several links to statements made in the wake of the SCOTUS decision, including from The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod president, Matthew Harrision; the two seminaries of the LCMS; a resolution passed by our LCMS Ohio District; and from Doxology, an organization helping pastors and congregations extend spiritual care to all people in all situations. I pray you will find them helpful and enlightening.
